Chir Ghat is one of the holy ghats (series of steps leading down to a water body) on the banks of the river Yamuna. At this place the famous pastime of Krishna stealing the clothes of the young Gopis of Vrindavan took place. There is an ancient Kadamba tree at this place which is still existing since the time of Lord Krishna.
Gopis were all pure devotees of Lord Krishna and wanted to attain Krishna as their husband. So at this place they would make a deity of Goddess Katyayani out of sand every day and offer her worship. They would pray to the Goddess that they may get Krishna as their husband. Every day the Gopis would come to this Ghat to take their baths and offer worship.
At the end of the vrata, Krishna Himself arrived there and very mercifully stole their clothes when they were taking bathing at this Ghat, and brought them upon this very holy Kadamba tree.
He bestowed upon them their desired boon: “Your hearts desires will be fulfilled on the night of the next Sharad Purnima.” Krishna Devotees still worship this tree and even make offerings to this tree. There is also a Yamuna Devi temple at this ghat.
चीर घाट
चीर घाट यमुना नदी पर स्थित अनेक घाटों में से एक है । इस स्थान पर भगवान् कृष्ण ने वृन्दावन के गोपियों के चीर (वस्त्र) हरण की सुप्रसिद्ध लीला की थी । यहाँ एक प्राचीन कदम्ब वृक्ष है जो भगवान् कृष्ण के समय से अभी तक विद्यमान है ।
गोपियाँ भगवान् कृष्ण की शुद्ध भक्त हैं और वे उन्हें पति के रूप में प्राप्त करना चाहती थी । वे यहाँ आकर प्रतिदिन रेत से देवी कात्यायनी की प्रतिमा बनाती और उनकी पूजा करती थी ताकि वे भगवान् कृष्ण को पति के रूप में प्राप्त कर सकें । गोपियाँ हर रोज़ इस घाट पर आकर स्नान एवं पूजा करती थी ।
उनका व्रत पूर्ण होने पर भगवान् कृष्ण ने आकर कृपामय भाव से उनके वस्त्र चुराए और उस पवित्र कदम्ब के वृक्ष पर लाकर रख दिए । भगवान् कृष्ण ने उनकी इच्छापूर्ति के लिए वरदान देते हुए कहा, “तुम्हारे हृदय कि इच्छा मैं आगामी शरद पूर्णिमा को पूर्ण करूँगा ।" कृष्ण भक्त आज भी इस कदम्ब वृक्ष की पूजा करते हैं और चढ़ावा चढ़ाते हैं । इस घाट के निकट ही यमुना देवी का मंदिर भी है ।
