Generally a chanting mala has 108 beads. Ever wondered what is the reason for having particularly 108 beads in the mala. Apart from being sacred, this number has a great significance. HDG Srila Prabhupada reveals “These 108 Upanisads contain all knowledge about the Absolute Truth. Sometimes people inquire abou the meaning of these 108 prayer beads, but because we think there are 108 Upanisads which contain full knowledge of the Absolute Truth, therefore 108 beads are accepted.”
The import is that when we chant Hare Krishna on 108 beads, it includes the essence of all the Upanishads. It is enjoined in the Kali-santaran Upanishad that the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra containing the sixteen names of the Lord is the only way of deliverance from the evil effects of Kali yuga, and there is no other way. This is the highest instruction of the Upanishads.
Another reason for having 108 beads in the japa mala is that Lord Krishna has 108 principal companions (gopis) of rasa dance. 108 beads represent these Gopis as per the opinion of the Vaishnava transcendentalists. Apart from these beads there is a special bead known as ‘Krishna bead’ which acts as the axis of the japa mala. One does not chant on the Krishna bead.
सामान्यतया जप माला में 108 मणि होते हैं। क्या आपने कभी सोचा है कि इन मणियों की संख्या 108 ही होने का क्या कारण है ? एक पवित्र संख्या होने के अलावा भी 
इस अंक का आध्यात्मिक महत्त्व है । कृष्णकृपामूर्ति श्रील प्रभुपाद समझाते हैं कि 108 उपनिषद होते हैं जिनमें परम सत्य का पूर्ण ज्ञान दिया गया है इसलिए माला में 108 मणि स्वीकार किए जाते हैं ।
तात्पर्य यह है कि जब हम हरे कृष्ण 108 मणियों पर हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र का जप करते हैं तो उसमें सभी उपनिषदों का सार सम्मिलित है। कलि संतरण उपनिषद् में कहा गया है कि इस कलियुग के कल्मष से मुक्ति के लिए केवल एक ही उपाय है - सोलह नामों वाले हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र का जप करना।
जप माला में 108 मणि होने का दूसरा कारण यह है कि भगवान् श्री कृष्ण की 108 परम सखियाँ (गोपियाँ) हैं। परम वैष्णवों के मतानुसार 108 मणि गोपियों को अंकित करते हैं। इनके अलावा एक विशेष मणि जो “कृष्ण मणि” कहलाता है, माला का आधार होता है । इस मणि पर कृष्ण महामंत्र का जप नहीं किया जाता है।
