Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stayed in Jagannatha Puri for eighteen years. Every year He participated in Ratha Yatra and also invited His devotees from Bengal to participate. During these Ratha Yatras he displayed various miraculous pastimes.
Simultaneously present in seven groups
Once during the Ratha Yara, Lord Chaitanya divided the devotees into seven groups for performing sankirtana. Each group had a main singer, co-singers, mridanga (drums) & kartal (hand cymbals) players. These groups resembled bunch of clouds and their uproarious kirtana resounded in the three worlds. Lord Chaitanya moved through these groups one after the other and danced in great jubilation. He entered into each group and loudly chanted “Hari! Hari!” and “Jaya Jagannatha!” After performing sankirtana in this manner for some time, Lord at once displayed a miracle. He simultaneously became present in all the seven groups. Every group felt that Lord Chaitanya is with them only and is not leaving their group and going elsewhere. But only a few advanced devotees of the Lord could understand this miracle and they were struck with wonder. Lord Chaitanya performed this pastime in the same manner as Lord Krishna, during the rasa-lila, expanded Himself into as many forms as the number of Gopis present. Each Gopi thought that Lord Krishna is present with her alone.
Moved the chariot with head
During the kritans in Ratha Yatra, lord Chaitanya would encourage all the devotees to dance. But when He began to dance, in order to see Him dancing, all the seven kirtana groups combined together and sang tumultuously. Offering obeisances to the Lord with folded hands, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu raised His face toward Jagannatha and prayed as follows.
namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca
jagad-dhitaya krishnaya govindaya namo namah
‘Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Krishna, who is the worshipable Deity for all brahminical men, who is the well-wisher of cows and brahmanas, and who is always benefiting the whole world. I offer my repeated obeisances to the Personality of Godhead, known as Krishna and Govinda.’
Lord Chaitanya danced in great ecstasy. Everyone was astonished and even Lord Jagannatha became extremely happy to see Him. The Ratha came stopped and remained immobile while Lord Jagannatha, watched the dancing. After circumambulating Jagannatha, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu after circumambulating the Ratha, went behind and began pushing it with His head. As soon as He pushed, the car immediately started to move, making a rattling noise. The people all around began to chant the holy name of the Lord, “Hari! Hari!”
रथ यात्रा में भगवान् चैतन्य द्वारा चमत्कार
भगवान् चैतन्य महाप्रभु ने जगन्नाथ पूरी में अट्ठारह वर्ष बिताए। हर वर्ष उन्होंने रथ यात्रा में भाग लिया और बंगाल तथा अन्य स्थानों से भक्तों को आमंत्रित भी किया । इन रथ यात्राओं के दौरान उन्होंने अनेक अद्भुत लीलाओं का प्रदर्शन भी किया ।
सात दलों में विस्तार
एक बार भगवान् चैतन्य महाप्रभु रथ यात्रा में संकीर्तन करने के लिए भक्तों के सात दल नियुक्त किये । प्रत्येक दल में एक मुख्य गायक के साथ कुछ सहगायक और मृदंग एवं करताल वादक भी थे। वैष्णवों के यह दल बादलों के समूह जैसे प्रतीत हो रहे थे और उनका उच्च स्वर में किया गया संकीर्तन तीनों लोकों में गूंज रहा था। भगवान् चैतन्य महाप्रभु इन सातों दलों में एक के बाद एक भ्रमण करके उत्साहपूर्वक नृत्य करने लगे। वे हर दल में जाकर ज़ोर ज़ोर से "हरि ! हरि !" और "जय जगन्नाथ" का घोष करने लगे । कुछ देर तक इस प्रकार रथ यात्रा के संकीर्तन में भाग लेते हुए उन्होंने एकाएक चमत्कार दिखाया। वे एकसाथ सभी सात दलों में उपस्थित हो गए। हर दल को यह प्रतीत होने लगा कि चैतन्य महाप्रभु केवल उनके ही साथ हैं और उनके दल को छोड़कर कहीं नहीं जा रहे । लेकिन भगवान् के कुछ विशेष भक्त ही इस अद्भुत लीला को समझ पाए और विस्मित हो गए । चैतन्य महाप्रभु ने यह लीला ठीक उस प्रकार रची जिस प्रकार भगवान् कृष्ण ने रास लीला के समय खुद को हर गोपी के साथ विस्तारित कर लिया था और प्रत्येक गोपी यह सोचने लगी कि भगवान् कृष्ण केवल उनके ही साथ हैं।
अपने सिर से रथ को धकेला
रथ यात्रा में कीर्तन के दौरान भगवान् चैतन्य महाप्रभु सभी भक्तों को नृत्य करने के लिए प्रेरित करते थे । किन्तु जब वे नृत्य करने लगे तो उन्हें देखने के लिए सभी सात दल एकजुट हुए और उच्च स्वर में कीर्तन करने लगे । भगवान् चैतन्य महाप्रभु ने रथ पर विराजमान भगवान् जगन्नाथ को प्रणाम किया और यह प्रार्थना अर्पण की :
नमो ब्रह्मण्य देवाय जो ब्राह्मण हिताय च
जगद्धिताय कृष्णाय गोविन्दाय नमो नमः
"मैं भगवान् कृष्ण को सादर प्रणाम करता हूँ जो सभी ब्राह्मणों के आराध्य हैं और गौओं तथा ब्राह्मणों के शुभचिंतक हैं। वे पुरे जगत के हितकर्ता हैं। मैं उन पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् को सादर प्रणाम करता हूँ जो कृष्ण और गोविन्द के नाम से जाने जाते हैं।
भावविभोर होकर चैतन्य महाप्रभु पुरे वेग से नृत्य करने लगे। सभी भक्तों के साथ साथ स्वयं भगवान् जगन्नाथ भी नृत्य देखकर प्रफुल्लित हो गए। उनका नृत्य देखने के लिए भगवान् जगन्नाथ का रथ रुक गया। महाप्रभु का नृत्य समाप्त होने के बाद भी रथ आगे नहीं बढ़ रहा था और सभी प्रकार के प्रयास विफल होने लगे । तब चैतन्य महाप्रभु ने रथ की परिक्रमा की और अपने सिर से उसे धकेला । रथा आगे बढ़ने लगा। और सबने "हरि ! हरि !" का जयघोष किया ।
